Class 2 Newsletter – Autumn Term 2022
A warm welcome back for the start of our new school year. We hope you all had lovely summers and enjoyed the fantastic weather we had! We look forward to getting to know our year three children and continuing to build relationships with our year four children. Our class have been a joy to have back in the classroom this week and we have been having lots of time to get to know each other and hopefully form strong bonds. We hope that the information below will clarify our expectations of the children in Class 2 and will act as a useful reminder of our rules and weekly routines.
Reading: We aim to hear the children read as often as possible and hope you will support this by hearing your child read at home on a regular basis. Regular reading really does make a difference and helps them to make good progress. Please sign and date their reading record each time they read at home, adding any comments you wish to make. Children need to have their reading books and reading records in school every day. Children who have completed their phonics books will move on to Oxford Reading Tree books for KS2 until they reach Stage 16, when they will then have open choice. We also encourage children to take home free reader books or non-fiction books to have read to them or share with an adult, which may be of a different level.
Homework: Children will be given homework most Fridays which needs to be completed by the following Thursday, unless told otherwise. They will normally receive two tasks to complete, either in their homework book or online. It would be beneficial for your child to have a pencil, rubber, ruler and colouring pencils available at home to complete their homework. If computer/internet access is an issue please could you let me know at the start of term so online work can be adjusted accordingly.
> Spellings – The children are set spellings every Friday which may follow a particular pattern, they should practice these as homework each day on the sheet given. Throughout the week we use various methods to practise these. They are tested on spellings on a Friday.
> Times Tables – These are practised on a regular basis in class and we will cover all times tables from 2s – 12s continuously through the year. They have a times tables test on a Friday. The children will be working towards a Bronze (x), Silver (÷) or Gold (x and ÷) target within a set times table.
P.E: Children must have their P.E kit in school every day. Usually in class 2 we will have P.E on a Tuesday and Thursday. Children normally keep these in school and take them home at half term.
Curriculum: A curriculum web can be found below for this term. This outlines our provisional plans for the term, should you have any questions about our learning or our routines please contact the school office.
Thank you for all your continued support, we are really looking forward to the term ahead and hope you are too!

Dear Parents and Carers,
Welcome back, I hope that you enjoyed your time together over the Easter period. The children and staff have warmly welcomed me back from maternity and it has felt like I was never away. It’s lovely to see some new faces in school since I left last year as well. I have been extremely impressed by the children in their first week showing lots of enthusiasm for their new topic. The following will clarify our expectations of the children in Class 2 and will act as a useful reminder of our routines.
WW2 Topic Web - This outlines our provisional plans for the term. The theme for this term is ‘Growing up during WW2’. We will be looking at key themes such as evacuation, rationing and The Blitz. You may like to remember our theme when planning any family days out. Download the Topic Web and Newsletter below.
Reading – We aim to hear the children read as often as possible and hope you will support this by hearing your child read at home on a regular basis. Children are given team points for each day they have read at home with an adult. Please sign and date their reading record each time they read at home. Children need to have their level appropriate school reading book and reading records in school every day. They may also take home a reading book from the class library as we like to encourage a love of reading even if this means a book being read to them.
Homework – Children will be given homework most Fridays which needs to be completed by the following Friday unless told otherwise. Homework will normally consist of an English and maths activity. Please encourage your child to complete the work as independently as possible. If they have had support with their homework, just a brief note to let me know would really be appreciated. It would be beneficial for your child to have a pencil, rubber, ruler and colouring pencils available at home to complete their homework. We also will begin to set homework online so if you have any issues providing internet access please make the school office aware as soon as possible.
> Spellings – The children are set spellings every Friday which may follow a particular pattern. Throughout the week we use various methods to practise these. They are tested on spellings on a Friday afternoon.
> Times Tables – These are practised on a regular basis in class and we will cover all times tables from 2s – 12s continuously through the year. They have a times tables test on a Friday. The children will be working towards a Bronze (x), Silver (÷) or Gold (x and ÷) target within a set times table.
P.E - Children must have their P.E kit in school every day. Usually in class 2 we will have P.E on a Wednesday and Friday.
If you have any questions about our topic, weekly routines or homework please do not hesitate to ask. Mrs Darling, Mrs O’Reilly, Mrs Rust and I look forward to working with you in the term ahead.

PE with Class 3- 22/04/22
This afternoon, Class 3 and Class 2 joined together to play some team building games. We had to focus on working together to achieve. Miss Morton and Miss Lamond were so impressed with our communication, patience, physical stamina, resilience and team work.
Dear Parents and Carers,
Happy New Year wishes for 2022 from Mrs Darling, Mrs O’Reilly, Mrs Rust and myself, and welcome back to school for the Spring term.
Many of you will already know that our topic for this term is the Ancient Egyptians, which the children are very excited about, and many are already carrying out independent research at home. We will always make time to share any extra work that children do at home. The children have shared some ideas of areas they would definitely like to cover as part of our study of Ancient Egypt, and I have included these on the Topic Web – mummification came quite high on the list! We will be studying all aspects of ancient Egyptian life, from the viewpoint of human and physical geography, as well as historical, for example, the discoveries of Howard Carter.
Our English work includes Egyptian-oriented texts where possible, although we have begun by studying the traditional tale of Cinderella which we are currently reworking to write our own versions, and this will lead into our work on the ‘Egyptian Cinderella’.
Reading
I was really pleased to see how many children were reading at home on a regular basis last term – thank you for this. It really does make such a difference across all areas of the curriculum as the more confident they become in reading, the more information they can access in topic work, which increases their enjoyment and knowledge. We aim to hear every child read 1:1 at least once each week and have a guided reading lesson weekly, where children are taught the skills of comprehension eg inference, prediction, retrieval, as well as having the opportunity to read in a group. In Class 2, children are given team points each time they read at home with an adult and this is recorded in their reading records. Children need to have their reading books and reading records in school every day.
P.E. and Swimming
This term, all of the children in Class 2 are having swimming lessons at Halstead Leisure Centre pool every Thursday morning. Our first session was very successful and enjoyed by all. As requested in the newsletter, please could you name all of your child’s clothes. On Fridays we are continuing to have SCS teach PE and their focus for the first half term is circuit training and for the second half term it will be football skills. We ask that children keep their P.E. kit in school every day, as it is sometimes needed at other times. As a minimum, children need to have a red T-shirt, shorts and plimsolls in school, at all times. Black tracksuit bottoms are optional for outdoor P.E.
Times tables
Times tables practice will be part of each child’s homework, and is personalised to each child’s level and progress. Children begin at the 2 x tables and progress to the 12 times tables by the end of year 4, when they are tested by the government Multiplication Times Tables Check. This will take place in June 2022 for the current Year 4s. Our times tables tests are in 3 parts – multiplication facts (bronze level), division facts (silver level), and then mixed multiplication and division facts (gold level), for each of the times tables.
Maths
In Maths our focus for the first half term is Multiplication and Division. The Year 3 syllabus is based on multiplication and division facts for the 2, 5, 10, 3, 4 times tables and the Year 4 syllabus is based on multiplication and division facts for all of the times tables. So, being confident in their times tables has a clear, positive impact on the children’s ability to access the multiplication and division learning.
Homework
In Class 2, children will be given homework most Fridays, which needs to completed by the following Thursday, unless otherwise instructed. Homework which is given in on Fridays may not be marked that week, due to the turnaround time. Homework usually comprises: spellings to practise; focused times tables practice; one piece of maths and one piece of English homework. Sometimes the maths will be on Mathletics, online. Please let me know if using Mathletics, online, causes any issues and we can discuss alternative options. Homework will always be on an area that your child will have covered already in class. Spellings and times tables tests will take place on Fridays.
The children and all of us are really looking forward to our exciting Spring Term.
Kind regards
Mrs B. Rivers

Dear Parents and Carers,
Welcome back to the new school year, and a very warm welcome to Class 2. Some of you may perhaps be new entrants to the school, some have moved from KS1 to KS2, and some have changed year groups to become our new year 4 role models in Class 2. Together, they have now become Class 2, and myself, Mrs Darling, Mrs O’Reilly and Mrs Rust are all here to teach, support and encourage all of the children to achieve the best they possibly can and enjoy every day.
Most of you will already know that our topic this Autumn half term is the Stone Age. The children are already very enthusiastic about this and I am very much looking forward to exploring the topic with them. As part of this topic we will be investigating rocks in Science and I welcome any samples of rocks or fossils you may wish to share with us – through photos, emailed photos, or actual artefacts, which I will keep safely under my control, and you may hand to an adult at the beginning of the day for safe-keeping or give to your child to bring in.
Reading
Reading is the key to opening up the curriculum and learning for the children, as fluency in reading can help them to access the learning across the curriculum, for example in History, Geography, PSHE, as well as in English lessons. We aim to hear every child read 1:1 at least once each week as well as having a guided reading lesson weekly, where children are taught the skills of comprehension eg inference, prediction, retrieval, as well as having the opportunity to read in a group. Please support your child’s reading skills by hearing them read on a regular basis. In Class 2, children are given team points each time they read at home with an adult and this is recorded in their reading records. Children need to have their reading books and reading records in school every day.
P.E.
We are incredibly fortunate to have two fantastic PE providers coming in to teach PE this term – SCS and Essex Cricket. PE will be on a Monday and Friday, and we ask that children keep their PE kit in school every day, as it is sometimes needed at other times. As a minimum, children need to have a red T-shirt, shorts and plimsolls in school, at all times.
Homework
In Class 2, children will be given homework most Fridays, which needs to completed by the following Thursday, unless otherwise instructed. Homework will usually comprise: spellings to practise; focused times tables practice; one piece of maths and one piece of English homework – where possible, the maths will be on Mathletics, online. Our times tables tests are in 3 parts – multiplication facts (bronze level), division facts (silver level), and then mixed multiplication and division facts (gold level), for each of the times tables.
Topic web
A topic web is attached below which outlines our plans for the term. The theme for this term is ‘reading through the ages’ and we will be looking at how communication has developed over time, from the Stone Age through to the Iron Age.
Class 2 have already shown their enthusiasm for learning, with their keen interest in the Stone Age and also through their home reading – thank you for this and please keep going! It makes such a difference, in their English learning and across the whole curriculum, and they earn a team point each time too!
I am very much looking forward to this term with Class 2, and look forward to meeting you all soon at the Autumn Parents’ Evening.
Kind regards
Mrs B. Rivers

Class 2 Newsletter – Summer Term 2021
Dear Parents and Carers,
Welcome back to school for the Summer Term. I am very pleased to introduce myself as your maternity cover teacher for Class 2, while Miss Lamond is away on maternity leave. Fortunately, Miss Lamond and I were both able to come in to school for a few days over the Easter holidays so that the transition process has been as smooth as possible. I also taught the children for an afternoon last term, where we got to know each other, and myself and the children created ‘This is me’ artworks, which will be going on display in the class. Already, I feel one of the family in the school and am looking forward to my time at Wethersfield.
The children in Class 2 have already shown me what enthusiastic and creative learners they are, and we have already enjoyed researching biomes of the world together, through which they have demonstrated their excellent team working and computer skills.
Our routines are mostly continuing as they were last term, and I confirm our routines and expectations as follows:
Reading
Regular reading really does help the children progress across the whole curriculum. We aim to hear the children read as often as possible and ask that you support this by hearing your child read at home on a regular basis. Please sign and date their reading record each time they read at home, adding any comments you wish to make. As an encouragement for the children, they will receive a team point for each recorded entry in their Reading Record. Children do need to have their reading books and reading records in school every day. The reading books are matched with the Oxford Reading Tree stages for KS2, until children become free readers.
P.E.
Children must have their P.E. kit in school every day please. As a minimum, children need to have a red T-shirt, shorts and plimsolls in school. Class 2 will usually have P.E. on Thursdays.
Topic
As you will see from the attached Topic Web which Miss Lamond and I have prepared together and also uploaded to the class pages, our theme for the term is Nature vs Machines. In English we have already begun to read and study Iron Man, which the children are very much enjoying and this has already inspired some lovely creative thinking. The theme of Nature vs Machines is continued through the children’s art, Science, DT, Geography and History lessons.
Homework
As in the Autumn term, children will be given homework most Fridays which needs to be completed by the following Thursday, unless otherwise instructed. Children will be given spellings to practise, plus the appropriate times tables to learn, and an English and a Maths task which will consolidate work they have been learning in class. We may begin to use Mathletics and Spag.com websites, so if computer/internet access is an issue please could you let me know. Spellings and times tables tests will take place on Fridays.
Performance
As Class 3 will not be going on a residential this year, we will be putting on a KS2 musical production, which will be directed by Miss Morton, supported by myself. Class 3 will be taking the leading roles and Class 2 will be supporting them. We are aiming to produce a fun-packed performance for you all to (hopefully) safely come into school and watch.
I am very much looking forward to working with all of the children over the summer term, and I look forward to meeting you all.
Kind regards,
Mrs B. Rivers
Class 2 Newsletter – Spring Term 2021
Dear Parents,
A warm welcome back and a Happy New year to all of our parents and children of Class 2. I hope that you all had a lovely Christmas break and managed to have time with close family. I was treated to some beautiful Christmas cards from the children and lots of artwork which I’m running out of fridge space for! I would like to say thank you also for all the lovely gifts our support staff and I received from you, they are always so thoughtful and much appreciated. The response and congratulations from you all on the news of my pregnancy has also been overwhelmingly positive. Although I am fortunate to work in such an amazing school and blessed with class after class of loving children, a long awaited dream has finally come true for me. Class 2 children will remain my utmost priority in the lead up to my maternity leave and I can reassure you that I will help prepare all children's transition smoothly during the change of staffing.
Now, 2021 hasn’t begun how we had expected and we see ourselves in our mix of remote learning and key worker children in school. I hope that you have been able to get to grips with our Google Classroom over time. I know I am still learning and making mistakes daily. From what I can tell it appears everyone in class has adapted quickly and I’m pretty sure some of them could teach me a few things on Google already! Please encourage them to respond to each other’s work uploads on the class stream – providing they are sensible. I strongly believe we need to foster their existing friendships and maintain a positive focus through this more difficult time. Sustaining this form of social interaction between the children should hopefully help them keep their bond as a class. There are areas where you are able to comment to contact me directly and I will endeavour to reply promptly, to help remedy any issues. Please continue to use the school office admin email address and phone number for any more pressing issues for more immediate answers.
Reading: We would aim to hear the children read as often as possible for those in school and hope you will support this by hearing your child read at home on a regular basis too. Regular reading really does make a difference and helps them to make good progress. Children in school still need to have their reading books and reading records in school every day.
Homework: Children will not currently be given homework tasks, although will continue to have spelling tests and be expected to practise their times tables regularly. Once class resumes face to face, we will re-establish a new homework routine accordingly.
P.E: Children in school must have their P.E kit in school every day. We don’t currently have our SCS coaches in school, although I will be teaching PE lessons myself. We will be looking at team games and then moving onto dance as per our topic web.
Topic: I have uploaded our topic web to our class page and Google Classroom. This outlines my provisional plans for the term. The theme for this term is ‘Wacky weather & South America’. There may be some adjustments to the plan in order to cater towards home learning appropriately. Anything extra you may want to do at home is always fantastic to see and great to share with us on our Google classroom.
Thank you so much for all your continued support. I know everyone is trying so hard to balance everything at the moment and honestly all I have seen from my children and yourselves is nothing but amazing so far! I am really looking forward to the term ahead, albeit not as we had hoped. I do feel determined still, to make a difference and hope to see you all as soon as it is safe to do so.

Class 2 Newsletter – Autumn Term 2020
Dear Parents,
A warm welcome back to lots of familiar faces and some new faces too! I was privileged to share summer term lockdown with my class 2 children via zoom calls and some other children within school. I look forward to getting to know our year three children this year and continuing to build relationships with our year four children – in person now!
Our class have been a joy to have back in the classroom and we have been having lots of time to get to know each other and start to form strong bonds. We have started to cover our English and maths curriculum this week and we are slowly bringing back our normal routines, which I have outlined below. I hope that this will clarify our expectations of the children in Class 2 and will act as a useful reminder of our rules and weekly routines.
The reading books are in the process of being re-labelled matching them to the Oxford Reading Tree stages for KS2, which we follow. I have given each child a stage/colour to begin with and we will assess progress through the term to move them up accordingly.
Homework: Children will be given homework most Fridays which needs to be completed by the following Thursday, unless told otherwise. Homework this term will begin with just spelling practice, times tables to learn and regular reading. They will be given their spellings list and times tables to learn for a test the following week. It would be beneficial for your child to have a pencil, rubber, ruler and colouring pencils available at home to complete their homework. In the second half term I intend on increasing homework by setting a maths and English task too as per our policy. We may begin to use Mathletics and Spag.com websites over time for homework, so if computer/internet access is an issue please could you let me know.
P.E: Children must have their P.E kit in school every day. Usually in class 2 we will have P.E on a Thursday.
Topic: A topic web is has been attached for this term below if you wish yo download it. This outlines our provisional plans for the term. The theme for this term is ‘Rebellious Romans’.
Thank you for all your continued support, I am really looking forward to the term ahead and hope you are too.

Class 2 Newsletter – Spring Term 2020
Dear Parents and Carers,
Welcome back, we hope that you enjoyed your time together over the Christmas period and we wish you a very happy New Year. The following information will clarify our expectations of the children in Class 2 and will act as a useful reminder of our rules and weekly routines.
Reading – We aim to hear the children read as often as possible and hope you will support this by hearing your child read at home on a regular basis. We always welcome parent readers. If you have any time in the week to come in and hear the children read, we very much appreciate it. Please sign and date their reading record each time they read at home. Children need to have their reading books and reading records in school every day. The children have a library session every fortnight to extend their reading of non-fiction books, if these are taken home we have asked the children to return these on their next library session.
Homework – Children will be given homework most Thursdays which needs to be completed by the following Thursday, unless told otherwise. Homework will normally consist of an English and maths activity. They will also be given their spellings list and times tables set to learn for the test the following week. Please encourage your child to complete the work as independently as possible. If they have had support with their homework, just a brief note to let me know would really help me know where to target their future learning. It would be beneficial for your child to have a pencil, rubber, ruler and colouring pencils available at home to complete their homework.
> Spellings – In class 2 the children are set spellings which may follow a particular pattern, rule or theme and are given out each Friday. Throughout the week we use various methods to practise these so the children will have lots of strategies to use at home. They are tested on these spellings on a Friday afternoon.
> Times Tables – These are practised on a regular basis in class and we will cover all times tables from 2s – 12s continuously through the year. They have a times tables test on a Friday morning. The children will be working towards a Bronze, Silver or Gold target within a set times table which is explained further in this term’s homework pack.
P.E- Children must have their P.E kit in school every day. Usually in class 2 we will have P.E on a Tuesday and Thursday. > Swimming – If your child has been identified as requiring swimming practice. Please ensure that they have their swimming kits and a towel with them for the lesson on Tuesday afternoons.
Topic – A topic web is provided below. This outlines our provisional plans for the term. The theme for this term is ‘What was it like to be a child during WW2’. We will be looking at key themes such as evacuation, rationing and bringing back to life the idea of a ‘Make do and mend’ mentality, so look out for a future letter asking for torn clothes or broken items in need of mending. There is lots of local history to discover and you may like to remember our theme when planning any family days out. We will also have a text focus for each half term as noted on our topic web.
Thank you for all your support in the autumn term. If you have any questions about our topic or weekly routines and homework please do not hesitate to ask. I look forward to working with you in the term ahead.
